Tony Grant took United to a half time lead against the Pikes when he bagged a brace with goals in the thirtieth and forty-second minutes, while Peter Collier replied for the home side in the thirty-fourth minute. Paul Wharton made it 3-1 in the fifty-second minute, but Peter Collier scored his second in the sixty-fifth minute to reduce the arrears. However, United proved too strong for the Pikes and hit a flurry of goals to put the game beyond doubt as Mark Ford scored in the eighty-fifth minute, Danny Craven in the eighty-sixth minute and Andy Gray made it 6-2 in the eighty-seventh minute.
